La spécialité
The Chaumont DSAA specialising in graphic design approaches communication in the broadest sense, without limiting itself to one medium or approach. Students can work alone or in groups to develop publishing projects (print or digital), signage, design and run workshops, create animations for Vjing, etc.
Project selected for the Cndg « Faire Signe » student competition, the « Fil Lettré » project led by Quentin Hirschler and Vincent Charles. A device to help with learning cursive writing.
The course combines research, reflection and experimentation on the one hand and professional training on the other. It is based on project-based teaching and tackles topical issues. It also aims to enable students to develop a rich and personal reflection based on a detailed knowledge of the issues in the field.
The course is part of a school accredited for graphic design and wood processing, with Applied Arts courses from the Bac STD2A to the DSAA, and a professional technical platform.
Thesis : Refusing to give? by Sébastien Marchand, an augmented reality thesis on the subject of personal data.
The course
This two-year course is a logical, but not systematic, continuation of studies after a DNMADe, a bachelor’s degree or any equivalent related to the speciality. It is a national professional diploma that prepares students for a professional career as a designer in a wide range of creative and applied design professions.
Classified at level 8 of the European Qualifications Framework, the DSAA design leads to 120 ECTS credits in the European Higher Education Area (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).
Diploma Projet : “Becoming Villard” by Marine Dautriche, creation of an itinerary (signage, map, urban displays) to rediscover the town of Villefontaine, its passages, its associations.
The curriculum
During the first year, students continue to perfect their technical skills, deepen their theoretical knowledge and develop individual or group projects. They also begin to develop their degree project. The year ends with a three-month work placement, which helps students to develop their professional skills and establish contacts that will be useful in their future careers.
In the second year, students focus on their personal project. This project, and the dissertation used to prepare it, are presented to juries of professionals, researchers and teachers. Professional partners are directly involved throughout the year in monitoring and awarding the diploma.
Workshops, conferences, lectures, etc. are organised on a regular basis, and students can be directly involved in the choice of speakers. Chaumont students also regularly take part in events organised by the Signe (the national graphic design centre), a key partner in the course, and run workshops as part of the Les Graphistes affichés association.
Further study
Graduates of a DSAA in graphic design are capable of working as art directors in offices or design studios, either freelance or as part of a company in the fields of publishing, communication, etc.
Students with the DSAA who so wish can also pursue research activities as part of their doctoral studies, by joining the university courses preparing them for a Master’s degree in Design.
Partners and projects
The course is run in partnership with the Centre national du graphisme and the town of Chaumont, and occasional collaborations are regularly organised with museums, training courses and companies. These collaborations are organised either by the teaching staff or by the students themselves, depending on the needs of their research project. Many projects and dissertations can be found on the course’s official website
